Understanding Dental Implants: They’re Not as Scary as You Think!

Implant dentistry has come a long way in the past several years. Created using new materials and techniques, modern dental implants look and feel exactly like real teeth.

The most common type of implant is an endosteal implant, which screws into the bone of the jaw. Unless you have a shallow jawbone, in which case a subperiosteal implant would work better for you, a screw-in implant is a great choice.

Deciding if Dental Implants Are Right for You

When trying to decide if dental implants are right for you, the concept might sound a bit scary. But the reality is that there is nothing scary about it. Implant dentistry has become so advanced that once in place, routine maintenance consists of normal oral hygiene like brushing and flossing, with occasional trips to the dentist for specialized cleaning and monitoring of the implant. That’s it!

If you still aren’t convinced that dental implants are nothing to be afraid of, here are some more reasons why they are the best thing you can do for your teeth, mouth, and jaw.

Made with Titanium

Titanium is one of the lightest yet strongest metals available. Better still, it has the unique property of being able to bind with your bone structure. Once your implant is in place, the jawbone accepts titanium as a regular piece of bone. The bone and titanium fuse, which is why titanium has one of the lowest rejection rates of any metal used in the implant dentistry field. Although considered permanent, implants can be removed professionally if necessary by being unscrewed.

Stabilizes the Jawbone

When you get a dental implant, the new tooth is placed in the gap where the old tooth was. This stabilizes the jawbone and makes a completely natural look that no one will be able to notice.

Moreover, the normal placement of a dental implant stimulates bone regeneration and growth, so bone loss is arrested and existing bone is preserved. One of the best reasons to consider implants is that they preserve the bone structure of your jaw.

Singles, Bridges, and Dentures, Too!

Implants are so versatile that they can be used to replace single teeth, to replace several teeth in a row like a bridge, or even to anchor an overdenture.

Overdentures easily can be removed for cleaning once in place. Then, they are just snapped or clipped back onto the implant studs.

Peace of Mind

The best reason to get a dental implant is for peace of mind. They look natural and are brushed and taken care of just like regular teeth. They are solid and permanent, and once they are established and in place, you can eat and chew normally. You won’t be self-conscious about your missing teeth ever again.
